Regal Logistics Pioneers RFID Tags
“Phase One of Regal’s RFID Implementation Plan is complete,” says Regal Logistics Vice President, Garry Neeves.  “We’re now able to place RFID tags on our customers’ cartons or pallets.  We’re also first to begin encoding those tags with the object class, EPC and serial numbers.  I know of no other 3PL provider that has custom-written its own Warehouse Management System (WMS) with an RFID module.”
Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID, is a tiny microchip that sends a signal when it gets near a reader.  When placed on a carton or pallet, it communicates with a computer in real time allowing the entire journey through the supply chain to become visible, more productive and highly accurate.
Regal Logistics produces both of the primary labels used in RFID technology today and ensures they will meet Wal-Mart’s requirements.  An incredibly small yet powerful chip and antenna are embedded into a 4 x 6 inch barcode label to create one sturdy package that is then affixed to a carton or pallet. Customers may choose:
  • Class 1 “M” tag with a stronger signal necessary for products containing metal, water or clay.
  • Class 1 “Squiggle Antenna” tag for all other products.
The new RFID Affix & Ship Service integrates seamlessly with Regal’s tier-one WMS to expedite and track customer shipments.  Data collected about the movement of goods is instantaneously posted to the WMS and available for viewing in real time with our dashboard interface at MyRegal
Regal Logistics continues to move forward with Phase Two of its RFID Implementation Plan.  It involves installing readers in warehouses, and placing and encoding tags on customers’ goods at the point they’re shipped from Regal.  Some manufacturers will have the tags placed and encoded internationally.  Either way, with the Phase Two installation of specialized readers—first on Regal’s outbound dock doors and then on inbound doors—critical information in tags is read as product both comes and goes.  Able to interpret as many as 200 tags per second, the new readers allow an entire pallet of cartons to move through quickly and efficiently.
Regal also has plans to implement a final Phase Three of its RFID Plan in the near future when every piece of product, not just pallets and cartons, will contain a tag.  This will further improve the flow of goods through the entire supply chain, and the ability to track and see in real time every item Regal Logistics receives, warehouses and distributes.
